The mini posters were part of the advance advertisement campaign put out by 20th Century Fox. These handbills were distributed to theaters, campuses, libraries, record stores, etc. The Star Wars illustrations on these mini-posters was done to coincide and/or resemble the blue and white motif of the Star Wars theatrical Style "B" advance teaser and the larger advance six and seven sheet posters. The mini posters are almost always found flat, they are printed on glossy slick paper, and the sizes vary. There were four different types of these handbills and some of them were printed with blanks, so different venues could be written in, while others had actual theater's names printed in the info box. These mini posters are unique, because they give us a look at the first advertisements announcing Star Wars.

Measure approximately, 27" x 41". This is the standard size in the USA, and the posters are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. The posters can be found either rolled, tri-folded, or folded, but the majority of them folded. (Before 1985, most posters were automatically folded at the printing facilities, so they could be handled more efficiently.) All of the American posters were distributed by the National Screen Service or issued by the studios for special events/fan clubs. The original studio issues tend to be rolled, while the National Screen Service issued versions, tend to be machine folded, so they could be sent in the film canisters along with the movies. The NSS versions generally have release date numbers on them, along with property disclaimers. The beautiful artwork and layout designs used for these posters, captures the essence of Star Wars Trilogy experience. The majority of these posters were printed exclusively by Gore Graphics in Los Angeles, and then sent back to 20th Century Fox as studio/promo versions or given to the National Screen Service for distribution throughout the USA. International versions are typically the same as the domestic versions, however, they are usually missing the MPAA film rating.

Usually only printed for special blockbusters films, these posters were mostly found folded until the mid 80's, (modern ones can be found rolled) and were used for advertisements mainly in large cities with a rail system. In the case of these two posters listed below, they measure 45" x 58" and were issued for use in New York City. They have the local area theaters listed with show-times on the posters and for some reason, the Empire Strikes Back was the only original trilogy movie to have any two-sheets produced. These subway banners were printed in low numbers and collecting them is sometimes a real challenge, but many of them occasionally show up at the auctions and other movie-houses for sale.

Measure approximately 81" x 81". These huge posters, originally began showing up in the early 1930's and were found folded and printed on matte paper in six individual pieces. For the Star Wars trilogy, there are three Star Wars US 6-Sheets, and most of them were printed for foreign use. The Star Wars artwork on these posters was done by the artists Tom Jung, Bob Peak, and Kazuhiko Sano. Six-Sheets in general were phased out in the early 1980's along with a lot of the other movie poster sizes, but before that happened, with advances in technology, these large outdoor posters were printed in as little as two individual pieces. These are very large posters, but for a Star Wars poster collector, they can be a crowning jewel for a collection.

Measure approximately 91" x 84". These huge posters, originally began showing up in the mid 1970's during an experimental advertising stage and were often confused with six-sheets. They were only used for a short time and then discontinued. Only a handful of movies had seven-sheets printed and the Star Wars trilogy, was lucky enough to have four versions of these huge released posters. There are two Star Wars advance versions - "Entertainment Odyssey" & "Style B" and a Star Wars Style "A" & "D" version. Unfortunately, for the Star Wars collector, there were only a limited number of these copies printed and it appears as though very few have survived (most were put up and then removed by LA Ad Art and destroyed/thrown away). So, obtaining one is next to impossible or very costly, however, we have seen all of them for sale at one time or another. Good Luck!

Vary in size, artwork, and paper material. Most of them are usually found folded and were used for advertisement in lobbies, on buildings, marquees, and billboards. Many of these posters have become extremely rare over the last thirty years. Even though the popularity of Star Wars has become greater over time, most people are not as interested in the bigger advertisements, because there is not a lot you can do with a billboard poster in your home, or the fact that there are only a few known to exist on certain ones. These posters were printed in low numbers, and the sizes, elements, and the fact that they were mostly thrown out after the movies releases, have contributed to the damage or destruction of a great number of them. Collecting the larger type posters is sometimes a real challenge, but certain ones of them occasionally show up at auctions and other movie poster houses for sale. The Star Wars theatrical standees are large self-standing displays that helped to promote the films. They are usually made of cardboard, and the original versions typically used the main artwork from each of the films. Standees are displayed in the theater lobbies in advance of film, and these large, self-standing posters have become more intricate as the years have progressed. With humble beginnings as simple flat cardboard posters, they can now be found as three-dimensional devices with moving parts and lights. The Star Wars Saga has an amazing array of different theatrical standees, each varying by different sizes and shapes.

American - Original Banner

Measures approximately 105" x 24". The original Star Wars Banner was one of the rarest items produced by the National Screen Service for 20th Century Fox. These silk-screened banners could be purchased for around $30, but, theater owners back in the late 70's thought the price was too costly, so most opted out of buying this theatrical lobby banner. Because very few were bought, very few now remain. The Star Wars artwork on these yellow fringed banners, contains a centered SW block logo in blue, on a striped brown and white colored background. It also has early illustration designs of Luke & Leia and C-3PO & R2-D2 on either side of the logo done by the artist Tom Jung. These style "A" concepts would later become the most easily recognizable and collectible movie poster artwork of all time. Not until the release of the newer prequel films, starting in '99, did more banners emerge for the Star Wars saga, so collectors have always been hoping to add this intriguing, very primitive looking banner to their collections, to offset the modern digital prequel banners of today.

On November 17-18, 1984 in Canada (for a United Way Benefit) and on March 28, 1985, in the United States, there was one complete, uncut showing of the Star Wars trilogy at nine participating theaters. These nine theaters were each given two personalized posters for the promotion of this event, creating the rarest and quite possibly the most valuable one-sheet ever produced for the Star Wars Trilogy. These black and white, "photographically enlarged" one-sheets, were created from the original local newspaper advertisements, with a few minor changes, and each one measures approximately 27" x 41", while the Canadian version is slightly larger. These heavy stock posters have an embossed, textured feel to them, and they contain the three movie logos, along with the theater's name, box office information, and any sound system logo (eg. THX) that applied to that individual theater. The American versions of this poster contain text at the top that proclaims - "For the first time in America, the Star Wars Trilogy", while the Canadian version says, "Special Showing, One Performance Only." Below we are showing the original advertisement from the Dallas newspaper, the original GCC North Park West one-sheet from the Northpark I & II cinemas, the infamous Plitt Carnegie theater bootleg reprint, and a ticket from the RKO Warner Theater. Unfortunately, these US posters are basically unattainable to even the most passionate of SW collectors because of their lack of availability, but other countries around the world (eg. United Kingdom / France / Australia / Germany) also held similar venues for the Star Wars Trilogy, and obtaining those theatrical posters is somewhat easier.

Both of the Caravan of Courage posters are from the international advertisement campaign, while the Ewok Adventure promo poster and the Battle for Endor image are from the American advertisement campaign. Both of these advertisements were distributed to local ABC TV stations and their affiliates around the country.

George Lucas wasn't able to accomplish certain aspects during the filming of the original movies, because of time, money, and technology. So, to show movie-goers what Lucas had originally envisioned, he re-released the original three movies with added footage and special effects for the 20th anniversary of Star Wars. These films are known as the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition. The artist Drew Struzan, who had worked on earlier Star Wars poster art, was chosen to illustrate the new Special Edition re-release posters. He drew them in such a way that when the posters are put together, they make up a larger piece of artwork known as a triptych. The posters measure approximately, 27" x 40" and they are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. They are usually found rolled and can be either single or double-sided. The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, played in 32 countries around the world, and the artwork used for all the various countries is the same artwork found on the USA one-sheets. A little over twenty years had passed since the original Star Wars film had first been released. After tuning up with the release of the Star Wars Special Edition pictures, George Lucas turned on the creative juices again and started with the making of the first film in his much anticipated prequel trilogy. Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, is a tale about a young boy who begins his journey on the way to becoming a Jedi. The tagline for this movie was "Every Saga has a Beginning", and it fully summed up what we could expect out of the film. We learned the beginnings of some of our favorite characters and other background information, that has helped us to understand concepts in the original trilogy. The teaser poster for Episode 1 was a concept that was created by the Lucasfilm art department, with several people getting credit for the creation of the Anakin-Vader shadow poster. The artist Drew Struzan, was once again asked to illustrate the main Episode 1 theatrical poster, and he designed the poster as a collage of characters and events from the film. The posters measure approximately, 27" x 40" and they are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. They are usually found rolled and can be either single or double-sided. The global use of the Struzan Phantom Menace artwork makes the posters all basically the same, except for their sizes, but it is interesting to see some of the other posters from around the world, because the film was translated into 32 different languages. You can find most of the other foreign Episode 1 posters listed on their respective countries pages. Also, there were additional foreign advertisement posters that can be seen as well. They were put up all over Asia and Europe. This series of posters contained the main individual characters with a theme applied to them known as the "One Series" posters.

The prequel saga continues with the film Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones. The story picks up ten years after Episode 1, with the continuing journey of Anakin Skywalker. We learn more plot twists and get information on the new evil forces at work, that continue to help fill in concepts from the original trilogy. Obi-wan continues to train the young Jedi Skywalker, while the Republic creates an army of clone warriors to try and defend the galaxy from the ever-growing threat of the Empire. Anakin falls in love, takes revenge for the death of his mother, and continues on his path to the dark side of the force. The tagline for this movie was "A Jedi Shall Not Know Anger, Nor Hatred, Nor Love." The teaser poster for Episode 2 was a concept that was created by art director Greg Bell and copywriter Paul Venables. They used themes from the Lucasfilm marketing and art department for the Anakin / Amidala back-to-back poster. The artist Drew Struzan, was once again asked to illustrate the main Episode 2 theatrical poster, and he drew the poster as a collage of characters and events from the film. The posters measure approximately, 27" x 40" and they are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. They are usually found rolled and can be either single or double-sided. The global use of the Struzan Attack of the Clones artwork makes the posters all basically the same, except for the size and language translation. Also, like Episode 1, there are additional foreign advertisement posters that can be seen as well, that were put up all over Asia and Europe. This series of posters contained sets of the main characters placed in front of either a row of Jedi's or an army of Clone troopers, with a theme to the posters known as the "Good Guys or Bad Guys". Also, as a bonus, Episode II was converted into the IMAX movie format. There were additional banners and posters for the special IMAX release of the film.

Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Posters

The prequel trilogy comes to a close, with the final chapter of Anakin Skywalker's journey to the dark side of the force. Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith begins two years after the Attack of the Clones. The Republic, has been pounding away at Count Dooku and his band of independent star systems. In order to avoid defeat, Count Dooku enrolls the help of General Grievous and others to help him wipe out the Jedi-Knights. Meanwhile, Darth Sidious is exacting his plans to take over the Galactic Senate and in the process, sway Anakin Skywalker to the dark side. The journey concludes with Obi-wan trying to protect Padme and her children, while at the same time, on a crash course showdown with his former pupil - now known as the Dark Lord - Darth Vader. The teaser poster's theme for Episode 3 uses an image of Anakin with a cape in the shape/ outline image of Vader. The artist Drew Struzan, was once again asked to illustrate the main Episode 3 theatrical poster, and he has drawn this artwork collage showing the main characters and events from the film, in front of a looming Darth Vader in the background. The posters measure approximately 27" x 40", and they are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. They are usually found rolled and can be either single or double-sided. Once again, the global use of the Struzan Revenge of the Sith artwork makes the posters all basically the same, but as the other prequel posters have shown, it is interesting to see some of the other languages printed on the familiar artwork. George Lucas continues his most popular franchise's legacy with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a computer-animated 3-D film that takes place between Star Wars: Episode II and III. The first-ever animated feature from Lucasfilm Animation, this action-packed space adventure follows the heroic Jedi Knights as they attempt to maintain order and restore peace during a time of monumental galactic strife. The Clone Wars full color theatrical poster contains the cartoon images of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi holding blue lightsabers, while Yoda and Ashoka, to the front and side of the collage are wielding green lightsabers. Surrounding the foursome are Clone troopers and ships in flight. The posters measure approximately 27" x 40", and they are printed on a thick and glossy paper stock. They are usually found rolled and are double-sided. The global use of New Wave Creative's illustration makes the posters all basically the same, but as the other prequel posters have shown, it interesting to see some of the other languages printed on the familiar artwork.
